This Sunday’s topic at Third Space. Some quick notes on the topic…
- First 100 returns on Google for “angels and aliens” – not a single examination of the topic from scriptural perspective – not even a response from a “Christian” source.
- It’s pretty hard to have a serious discussion about this topic when even the History Channel uses “ancient alien astronaut theorists” as a source.
- A lot of people portray angels as beautiful, helpful, gentle, loving, wise, kind… and they may be all that. But it’s worth noting that when an angel appears to humans in the bible the first words out of the angel’s mouth is always, “Don’t be afraid.”
- Important distinction: Many of the world’s religions have stories of other worlds or otherworldly gods. These are examples of mythology not cosmology. Mythology is the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves. These stories ask, Why are we here? What is the meaning of our lives? Cosmology is the scientific study of the origins of the universe. How did we get here? A great deal of confusion arises when we mash-up the two. (see #2 above)
